How to roll dice online
- Choose your dice. Tap a die above to add it — d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, d20 or d100 — tap again for more, or
press − to take one away. Prefer typing? Enter a roll such as
3d6+2in the notation box. - Add a modifier if your game calls for one: the + and − buttons add or subtract a flat number from the total.
- Roll. Press Roll, tap anywhere on the table, press R on a keyboard, or switch on shake-to-roll on a phone.
- Read the result. The total, each die's value and the chance of rolling that total appear beside the table. Natural 20s, doubles and maximum rolls are called out.
- Hold and re-roll (optional). Tap a die on the table, or its chip in the results, to hold it; the next roll throws only the others.
Is this dice roller fair?
Yes — every face of every die is exactly equally likely. Each number is drawn by your browser's cryptographically
secure random number generator (the Web Crypto API, crypto.getRandomValues), the same kind of source used to generate
encryption keys. Turning a random 32-bit number into a die face by plain division would slightly favour low faces, so the roller uses
rejection sampling: the rare draws that would cause that bias are discarded and drawn again.
The 3D throw is a genuine physics simulation — gravity, friction, bounce and dice knocking into each other — but the physics never decides the number. Each die is turned by one of its own symmetries so that the drawn face lands on top, which keeps the animation natural and the result perfectly fair. If a die comes to rest leaning against another (a "cocked" die), the throw is quietly redone before you see it, just as most tables would call for a re-roll.
Every die you can roll
| Die | Shape | Chance per face | Average | Often used for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| d4 | Tetrahedron | 25% | 2.5 | Dagger damage, Magic Missile, healing potions |
| d6 | Cube | 16.67% | 3.5 | Board games, Fireball, sneak attack |
| d8 | Octahedron | 12.5% | 4.5 | Longsword and rapier damage, many hit dice |
| d10 | Pentagonal trapezohedron | 10% | 5.5 | Dice pools, percentile rolls, cantrips |
| d12 | Dodecahedron | 8.33% | 6.5 | Greataxe damage, barbarian hit dice |
| d20 | Icosahedron | 5% | 10.5 | Attack rolls, ability checks, saving throws |
| d100 | Two d10s (tens + units) | 1% | 50.5 | Percentile skills, random tables |
Need something unusual? Type any die from 2 to 1,000 sides — 1d3, 2d7, 1d30 — and it is rolled
as a flat die, since those have no standard physical shape.
Dice notation in one minute
Games write rolls as NdS: N dice with S sides. A few examples you can roll straight away:
- 2d6 — two six-sided dice, added together.
- 1d20+5 — one twenty-sided die plus 5.
- 4d6dl1 — four d6, drop the lowest: the classic way to roll a D&D ability score.
- 2d20kh1 — roll two d20s and keep the higher: advantage. Type
advfor short. - d% — percentile dice, 1 to 100.
The full rules, with every symbol explained, are in the dice notation guide.
Odds worth knowing
| Roll | Fact | Probability |
|---|---|---|
| 2d6 | Total of 7 (the most common) | 6/36 = 16.67% |
| 2d6 | Doubles | 6/36 = 16.67% |
| 3d6 | Total of 18 | 1/216 = 0.46% |
| 1d20 | Natural 20 | 5% |
| 2d20, keep highest | Natural 20 with advantage | 39/400 = 9.75% |
| 2d20, keep highest | Average result | 13.825 (vs 10.5) |
| 4d6 drop lowest | Average ability score | 12.24 |
| 5d6 | All five the same (a Yahtzee) in one roll | 6/7,776 = 0.077% |
The Probability tab under the roller works these out live for whatever dice you choose, and the dice probability calculator explains how.
What else it does
- Realistic 3D dice with bevelled edges, engraved numbers and soft shadows, on felt or wood.
